In the end, the Germans  failed to stop the Aliies supply routes and suffered a huge blow to their naval fleet. They lost three-fourths of the german U-boat fleet which was a total of 783 U-boats sunk and 30,000 sailors killed.

Germany overlooked the importance of the submarine and lost the Atlantic. If the Germans would have realized that the U-boats were key to winning, then Germany and the axis could have won the war. If the Axis won over the water, the Allies wouldn't have been able to support the troops and keep their economy going.

Moving troops and supplies wasn't going to be easy with the Germans attacking any Allied ship. Allies knew that ocean routes were dangerous but because we were in need of supplies, it had to be done. Over the course of the 5 years, Britain had sustained a great amount of damage. They had lost 3500 merchant ships along with 175 warships and some 72,000 naval and merchant seamen were killed.
