The U-boat operation was coming to a close near the end of the war. Hitler was losing steam and necessary supplies to keep control of the seas. This article states that the Allies were closing in on the enemy. Specifically the German U- boats and ships. A German U-Boat surrendered to the Canadians in the Newfoundland Port. Events like this occurred more regularly because the enemy were running out of fuel to keep them going. One option was to purposely get captured because they were too far out towards the west side of the Atlantic.
